BEK’s notes on James, written March 1902:
“JAMES KENNEDY, having received a cadetship from the East India Company, left London on 24 April 1798 at 5 o'clock in the morning, for Portsmouth, and sailed for Bengal in the 'Lord Duncan' on Sunday 29 April at 20 minutes past 6 in the evening. Had a message from the Pilot all safe and well. (Wonderful details! says BEK)
“James's career in India was remarkably successful, making rapid progress as an officer in the Bengal 5th Light Cavalry, rising eventually to be its Colonel. He and Mrs Kennedy narrowly escaped with their lives in the terrible mutiny of 1857, and eventually settled in Benares, where he held some official appointment until his death. He had been made a CB, and had risen to the rank of Lieut. General, but continued Colonel of 'The Old 5th' to his dying day, which occurred at the age of 81. He never left India for a single day, and only occasionally recruited (sic) his health by a visit to the 'hills'. He died on September 26 1859.”

Notes
Following, written in 1885, comes from MacKellar Ancestry Public Tree:
“Mr Benjamin Edward Kennedy, who has been a member of the Stock Exchange for seventy years, was born on January 14, 1815, the year of the Battle of Waterloo and the year in which Bismarck, Dean Church, Dean Stanley, and Anthony Trollope were born. He was educated privately at Hove and at London University and became a member of the Stock Exchange in 1836, the year which saw the birth of the Prime Minister and Mr Chamberlain. At that time the Stock Exchange was a very small building a the top of Capel Court with about 500 members. There are now over 5,000 members. He is the oldest member of the Reform Club.”

Notes
BEK’s notes on James, written March 1902 (From MacKellar Ancestry Public Tree):
[BEK = Benjamin Edward Kennedy]

Notes
From MacKellar Ancestriy Public Tree:
Memoirs copied from old manuscripts relating to family Matters, found mostly in possession of one of his granddaughters; collected and rearranged by BENJAMIN EDWARD KENNEDY, one of his grandsons. Dated March 1902:
“John Kennedy married "Nanny Hadfield", one of three sisters living in Lancashire, who were called "the three Lancashire witches", supposed to have been so called on account of their beauty and other charms. He came of an old family long resident in the county of Ayrshire, NB, but soon made up his mind to go south and settle in England.
“Mr Kennedy must have been, at one time, in comfortable circumstances, and had some valuable and powerful friends, who materially assisted him in obtaining excellent positions for his sons. The eldest, John Hadfield, had a good post in the India House; James received a cavalry cadetship under "John Company"; Edward was appointed a midshipman to one of the HM ships, Royal Navy; while Benjamin became clerk to his father soon after he settled in London as a stockbroker.”
The “coming south to settle in England” must refer to his father.

Notes
Married George Wyld in Q3 1852 Marylebone 1a 910 (910 transcribed as 900 in Mary’s case)
George is a brother to Henry who married Susan and then Louise.
From a website of a descendant (Alasdair Broun): m. 26 Aug 1852, Unitarian Chapel, Little Portland St, Marylebone, London. [In London Family History Centre Film Catalogue, this chapel is described as ‘English Presbyterian and Unitarian’. I believe it to be the same chapel that Sydney Kennedy and Adelaide Ullathorne were married in (in one of their ceremonies).]
George Wyld’s dates: 17Mar1821 Gilston, Fife — 1906 Tonbridge.
Alasdair Broun’s grandfather was Claud Leonard Broun, who was himself a grandson of George and Mary Emily.
According to Claud Leonard, “In religion, my forbears had all, so far back as I know of them, been adherents of Presbyterianism, except the Kennedys who were Unitarians...The Kennedys ... were won over [to Anglicanism] by a Mr Holland, the incumbent of what was then called Quebec Chapel – now long known as the Church of the Annunciation – who afterwards became a Canon of Canterbury. He was one of my godfathers." [Claud Leonard’s dates are 1879—1961.]
Alasdair also writes “My father tells me that there is a tradition in the family that this branch of Kennedys are descended from the Earls of Cassilis, because one of his Kennedy ancestors used their heading on his notepaper.”
