Upon this memorable occasion, when they exhibited the greatest values, they were conspicuous by wearing Green Boughs in their hats. One of 6 brothers, with Hubert the eldest. Variously Theobald Walter, Theobald Butler, Theobald Walter de Boteler. First Baron Butler and the first Chief Butler of Ireland. Also Bulter of England and High Sheriff of Lancashire for 1194. Ancestor of the Butler family of Ireland.
As butler of Ireland in 1177 he and his successors were to attend the Kings of England at their coronation, and that day present them with the first cup of wine. Some time after, that King granted him the prisage of wines, to enable him, and his heirs, the better to support the dignity of that office. By this grant, he had two tons of wine out of every ship, which broke bulk in any trading port of Ireland, and was loaded with 20 tons of that commodity, and one ton from 9 to 20.
He died between 4 August 1205 and 14 February 14, 1206, and was buried at Owney abbey.

The New York Times obituary:
A. Gardiner Creel, 80, Island's Co–owner, Dies
Published: December 18, 1990
Alexandra Gardiner Creel, the co–owner of Gardiners Island, believed to be the largest privately owned island in America, died yesterday at North Shore University Hospital in Glen Cove, L.I. She was 80 years old and lived in Mill Creek, L.I.
She died of lung disease, said her brother, Robert David Lion Gardiner of Palm Beach, Fla.
Mrs. Creel and her brother inherited the 3,300–acre island on the eastern end of Long Island, which was bestowed on her family by King Charles I in 1639. She was involved in many social and charitable organizations, including the Colonial Dames of America.
Her death may send Gardiners Island back into the courts. Mr. Gardiner, the island's other owner, and Mrs. Creel's daughter, Alexandra Gardiner Creel Goelet of Manhattan, have been arguing for the past decade over zoning and other environmental issues on the island.
In addition to her brother and her daughter, Mrs. Creel is survived by four grandchildren. Her husband, James Randall Creel, a retired judge of the New York City Criminal Court, died in July.

Old Family Feuds Over Its Ancestral Island
By ERIC SCHMITT, Special to the New York Times
Published: April 15, 1989
In 1639, King Charles I of England bestowed upon a loyal soldier and engineer named Lion Gardiner a royal patent to this 3,300–acre island of white oak and osprey out between the prongs of eastern Long Island.
Now, 350 years later, the descendants of Lion Gardiner are preparing to celebrate the anniversary at their ancestor's Gothic–style mausoleum in East Hampton.
Alexandra Gardiner Creel Goelet and her family have planned their graveside festivities for April 23. Her uncle, Robert David Lion Gardiner, and his family are waiting until May 29 to hold their ceremony. Distant Cousins by Choice
Why not one big party? Truth be told, the two families can't stand each other. And therein lies the story of a decade–old family feud for control of what is believed to be the largest privately owned island in America, an island that over the centuries has been a plantation, a burial ground for Captain Kidd's pirate treasure, a Revolutionary War hospital and a hunting preserve for wealthy sportsmen.
*************
It's a nasty tiff, with one faction accusing the other of dumping family portraits in a dank shed to rot and plotting to build condominiums and tennis courts where deer roam and wild turkeys cavort. (It's also a noisy one, with warring battalions of public–relations people.) The ill feelings run so deep that the Surrogate's Court in Manhattan has ruled that use of the island should alternate between the two sides every two weeks, and that each faction should be assigned bedrooms in the brick colonial manor house that are theirs alone to furnish and decorate.
As in many family disputes, money is at the heart of the matter. But looming over all of this is whether the island will stay pristine or be developed some day. When Sarah Diodati Gardiner, the last outright owner of the island, died in 1953, she left the island in trust for the use of her nephew, Mr. Gardiner, on the one hand, and her niece, Alexandra Gardiner Creel, the mother of Mrs. Goelet, on the other.
Mr. Gardiner visited the island regularly. Mrs. Creel, who is now in her 80's and in poor health, was rarely there. But in 1976 her daughter married Robert Goelet, the scion of a prominent New York City real estate family and chairman of the American Museum of Natural History. The couple, both avid environmentalists, began spending summers and weekends amid the island's forests, rolling hills, windswept fields and rich bird and animal life. Dividing the Wealth
But by the early 1980's the $1 million trust fund was exhausted, and the two sides of the family couldn't agree on how to pay for the island's upkeep. They went to Surrogate's Court, and Surrogate Marie M. Lambert ruled that both sides would share the expenses and neither side would exclude the other from the island so long as the payments were kept up to date.
The two sides grudgingly accepted this arrangement until one day, about eight years ago, when Mr. Gardiner, the 78–year–old self–described "Lord of the Manor," accused Mr. Goelet of trying to run him over with a truck near the manor house. Mr. Goelet denies he ever tried to hit Mr. Gardiner.
Shortly thereafter, Mr. Gardiner stopped paying his share of the maintenance costs – more than $100,000 a year at the time – and temporarily relinquished his visiting privileges. The Goelets picked up the entire cost and, in addition, renovated several buildings, including the island's trademark, an 18th century windmill.
***************
In a telephone interview from Palm Beach, Fla., where he lives when he is not in one of his three houses on Long Island, Mr. Gardiner explained that he was too busy building a shopping center, the Gardiner Manor Shopping Mall in Bay Shore, L.I., to get involved. But with the anniversary this year, Mr. Gardiner renewed his occupancy rights by paying the trust company that administers the island, the U.S. Trust Company of New York, $350,000 for his share of this year's taxes and upkeep. Mildew on a Portrait
"I haven't suddenly taken an interest in Gardiners Island," said Mr. Gardiner, a garrulous fount of family history and lore. "I used to lay on my tummy there, reach out and embrace the land."
On April 2, Mr. Gardiner, accompanied by a "karate expert and a guard with a pistol," he said, returned to the island for the first time in almost eight years. To his horror, he found that his clothes and a guestbook signed by Katharine Hepburn and Gloria Swanson, among others, had disappeared. Even worse, he found a portrait of himself stored in a wooden shack, near the old blacksmith quarters and carpentry shop, "covered with an inch of mildew."
"The Goelets took my portrait out of the manor house because they couldn't stand to look at me; they're that petty!" said Mr. Gardiner, who is planning to sue the Goelets for damages.
During a tour of the island arranged for reporters and community groups as part of the anniversary celebration, Mrs. Goelet denied that she or her husband had moved the painting or any of her uncle's belongings.
"Every family has its feud, and their roots are hard to trace," said Mrs. Goelet, who along with her husband is reluctant to discuss the squabble. "My uncle's not the worst man." Intimations of Condos
Who will own the island after Mr. Gardiner and his sister, Mrs. Creel, die and the trust is dissolved is a hot topic. The Goelets, who have built nesting platforms here to help increase the osprey population to about 125 from 20 a decade ago, said they want to keep the island as a nature preserve. Mr. Gardiner said he believes that the Goelets have opposed increasing the one–acre zoning on the island because they plan to build condominiums and golf courses some day.
The Goelets would appear to be the sole heirs; Mr. Gardiner, who is married, has no children. But Mr. Gardiner has announced that he plans to adopt a wealthy young cousin who is a direct descendant of Lion Gardiner. "I'll produce an heir this summer," he said.
************
Clearly, neither side plans to give in. "There's very much a sense of peace here," said Mrs. Goelet, looking out over the island's clay cliffs where seals and Canada geese bob in the waves. "I love it here."
"I'm not going to be the last Gardiner decendant," Mr. Gardiner said. "I'm not over the hill."

Heir To the Isle Dies At 93
By Kathryn Georgette
The Independent
Robert David Lion Gardiner, the last heir to carry the name of the
family that has owned Gardiner's Island since 1639, passed away at his Main
Street, East Hampton home on Monday morning. He was 93.
Mr. Gardiner was born in New York on February 25, 1911 to Robert
Alexander Gardiner and the former Nora Loftus. He attended St. George's
Prepatory School in Newport, Rhode Island, graduated from Columbia
University in 1934, then attended Yale Law School. He also served as a Navy
lieutenant during World War II.
Mr. Gardiner was living in New York and working on Wall Street, when
he and his sister Alexandra Gardiner Creel inherited the island in 1953 from
his aunt Sarah Diodati Gardiner. In 1961 he married Eunice Bailey Oakes, who
survives him. The couple never had children.
Mr. Gardiner worked for his family's real estate agency. His personal
wealth was once reportedly worth $135 million, and his holdings included a
shopping center in Islip. In addition to serving on the Suffolk County
Planning Board, he also ran as a Democratic candidate for the New York State
Senate in 1960, unsuccessfully.
Gardiner's Island, which is comprised of 3340 acres, is located off
the coast of the South Fork of Long Island in Gardiner's Bay. It was
originally obtained by Lion Gardiner, from a grant given by King Charles I,
of England, and was the first Colonial English settlement in New York State.
It is the only real estate still intact as part of an original royal grant
from the English Crown. Lion reportedly purchased the island in 1639 for "a
large black dog, some powder and shot, and a few Dutch blankets."
Robert D.L. Gardiner, who named himself "the 16th Lord of the Manor,"
long sought to solely control the future of the island, and has had a long
standing feud with niece Alexandra Creel Goelet, who now stands to inherit
sole ownership of the island.
The disagreement began in the late 1970s when the trust fund set aside
for Gardiner's Island's up–keep began to dwindle, and Alexandra Gardiner
Creel and Robert D.L. Gardiner were charged with splitting the island's
maintenance fees. Reportedly, Mr. Gardiner refused to pay his half of the
expenses, while his niece's husband, Robert Goelet, began footing the bill
for the island's expenses. While Mr. Gardiner was reportedly delinquent in
the hopes that New York State would take control of the island and deem it a
historic site, in 1980 the Creel–Goelet family took Gardiner to court and he
was barred from the island.
In 1992 the state appeals court ruled that as an heir Gardiner could
not be kept from the island, and he returned to visiting the island
regularly and holding tours once more. The reported two million dollar per
year maintenance fees continued to be paid solely by the Creel–Goelet
family.
According to a local source, Gardiner "beefed up" his summer tours to
anywhere between 20 to 30 a summer, each comprising of about a dozen lucky
individuals. The Lord of the Manor, who loved to regale visitors with the
stories of his esteemed ancestry, would begin tours in South End Cemetery in
East Hampton at the Tomb of Lion Gardiner. Next on the tour was a walk
through his Main Street manse, followed by a trip to the island aboard his
boat "The Laughing Lady." Upon reaching their destination, the groups would
have lunch before touring the expansive grounds, including the family
cemetery and the rock formation said to be the burial site for Captain Kidd'
s treasure.
Mr. Gardiner, according to a local source, used to joke that the
Goelets "don't even want my dead body here." He used to tell visitors
touring the island's cemetery, "This is where I will rest, but I hope not
too soon."
Mr. Gardiner will not be buried on the family's island, as was his
wish, but rather at the South End Cemetery, this Friday at 11 a.m. A
memorial service will be held in mid–September at Saint Luke's Episcopal
Church.

1859: Mayor of Waterford City
Birth/Death References
M–B has death 1872 Buston, Derbyshire, England
There is no Buston in Derbyshire, but there is Buxton.
There is an index entry for a death certificate of a John Mackesy, age 60, for the 3rd quarter of 1872 and for the Chapel en Le Frith registration district. This district includes Buxton.
If this death age is correct, then the appointment as Surgeon in 1815 has to be wrong, the marriage date is perfectly plausible, and he would have been a young mayor. If the surgeon appointment is correct, he would be rather old at time of his marriage, and the Buxton death must refer to someone else or the index age is wrong. [The indexes do have mistakes, but very very few.]
When did he arrive in England? I can only find two John Mackesys in the 1871 Census (which took place on the night of 7th/8th April), and neither can refer to the Buxton death and both are much too young.

http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Cork/1863/SEP.html
The Cork Examiner, 24 September 1863
The medical profession are about to pay a well merited and highly–deserved compliment to Dr. Mackesy, of Waterford. The profession paid a high compliment to Dr. Mackesy when it elected him President of the Royal College of Surgeons, a distinction which had previously been soley confined to those resident in the metropolis. He was the first country practitioner elected to this high poisition, its dignity being fully maintained by him ; and it will descend with a higher lustre to his successor, as the profession mean to show their appreciation of his services.—Waterford News.

Notes
Most of the information about Violet’s siblings and ancestry comes from the Mackesy–Buckley Family Tree – a public tree on Ancestry, referred to as M–B. This does not have any stated sources.
I have been able to confirm various parts — all stated sources have been provided by me.
Assumption that my Violet is the same person as M–B’s Violet is based on (i) date of birth and (ii) her place of birth (English Census) is the same as her sibling Col. J.P.

Surname changed to Loftus at some stage
Both surnames (Murphy and Loftus) in the marriage index, suggesting that he was born Murphy.

This appeared in the Church Times, 5 September 2008;
Bernard Segrave–Daly, former managing director of Adnams Brewery, Southwold said:
“My grandfather and his brother, Jack and Pierse Loftus, finished a career in brewing in South Africa in 1902 and bought a stake in Adnams, which was needing investment. They bought 50 per cent of the equity, and stayed till September 1914. I started work there 50 years later, on 1 Oct ober 1964, and retired on the last day of the last century. I eventually became managing director, and so I’ve been part of Southwold for 37 exceedingly happy years.”
